Things you learn from a 1st Grader

At Sydney's recent parent teacher conferences her teacher was very complementary of Sydney's ability to learn. She's VERY good about spitting random facts out. Recently they studied a section on butterflies and moths. And once again, I was sent to the internet to research some of Sydney's "facts" I wasn't sure were true... and of course they ARE!

Fact #1- How do you tell the difference between a moth and a butterfly? According to Sydney a moth rests with it's wings together and and butterflies rest with their wings spread. And wouldn't you know it SHE IS RIGHT!!! Here are some other facts about the differences between moths and butterflies:

Fact #2- Did you know that a caterpillar only has 6 legs? NO WAY! They have lots more than that, right??? Well, I guess not... Sydney was right again... http://www.backyardnature.net/caterpil.htm

Insects have six legs, right? But how many legs does this caterpillar seem
to have? In the picture, the caterpillar's head is on the right. The
yellow-framed inset shows a close-up from below of the head and to the left of
the head are six black jointed legs. However, in the larger picture notice that
midway the body there appear to be eight more legs. Those stubby, mid-body legs
are not real, jointed legs -- they're not the legs we refer to when we talk
about an insect's six legs. They are called prolegs and they function very well
as legs but they're not to be counted among those six legs... Finally, at the
rear end there's a very special pair of prolegs, called the anal prolegs, and
they make pretty good legs, too, but also they are not to be counted as "real
legs."

I wonder if she will be an entomologist?
